Great Stony Hill photo

Trig Point at summit of Great Stony Hill

Great Stony Hill lies on the Tees/Wear watershed; its summit area is seen here from the east against a backdrop of the highest hills of the north Pennines - Great Dun Fell, Little Dun Fell and Cross Fell. (Note: There's some doubt as to how this fell should be named; Great Stony Hill is favoured by the Nuttalls and is used here, but the names High Field and Coldberry End are used too, perhaps Grasshill Common could be applied as well. None of these names necessarily refer to the hill as a whole but to features of it. It's common too for hills of the north Pennines to be known by different names according to the valley from which a slope arises.)
